Who loved strawberry milk as a kid? This is kind of a serious question. Because given the choice between strawberry and chocolate, I can’t imagine anyone choosing strawberry. Heck, I’d take the plain white milk over the strawberry any time my cafeteria was out of chocolate. Strawberry was a last resort. Not that it wasn’t good, in its own way… it just wasn’t as good. And yet… strawberry milk seems like such a quintessential part of my childhood. You can’t think of elementary school without thinking of lunches in the cafeteria, trying to swap your carrots for someone else’s Oreos, slurping at the bottom of your empty milk carton with one of those tiny little plastic straws. And sometimes those milk dregs would be strawberry, whether you liked it or not.

I find myself craving things from my childhood more and more these days. Is it just the fact that I’m getting older–and the further we get from something, the more we want it? Or maybe it’s that it seems pretty much everyone my age has kids and I’m sympathizing more and more with people who want those kids to have awesome childhoods… that are also healthy ones. I don’t plan on having kids, but I’d still want them to be able to enjoy the things I did without all the attendant risks of, well, all of the health problems I have. Kind of a bittersweet reason to jump into the kitchen to develop a recipe! This thick and creamy beverage might as well be called a strawberry milkshake. There’s no ice cream in it, but it feels so decadent! With perfectly ripe peak-of-the-season strawberries, the flavor is rich and refreshing… and so much better than that pink stuff they served in the elementary school cafeteria.
